Maturuna Tinta… this is probably a grape you have never ever heard of. It is not grown anywhere else in the world, making it a super interesting variety to support the diversity of Rioja wines. Plantings are very limited though, what makes this wine so very unique. Juan Carlos Sancha’s mission -to revive some of Rioja’s indigenous grape varieties- has succeeded so well. It suits all kind of meats, cheeses and sausages. Meet this red gem!
Due to 11 months aging in new French oak barrels the wine has dense aromas of ripe black fruit, smoke and spices, bittersweet dark chocolate notes, balsamic and some green pepper which is typical for Maturana.
Full bodied, with a warm mouthfeel and velvety tannins, a long finish.

Juan Carlos Sancha
Bodegas Juan Carlos Sancha is a winery located in Rioja Alta, one of the best-known wine-producing regions of Spain. This winery, operated in the town of Baños de Río Tobía (Rioja Alta) and run by Juan Carlos Sancha (who is Professor of Oenology at the University of La Rioja), is situated on five hectares of land along the border of D.O.Ca. Rioja, and in the coldest zone of this wine DO.
This cooler location contributes to the high quality of the wines. Juan Carlos Sancha’s winery also has vines of minority varieties such as Tempranillo Blanco, Maturana Tinta, Maturana Blanca, varieties that he and his university colleague Fernando Martinez de Toda discovered, rescued from extinction, and developed. Professor Sancha then went on to found the first Rioja winery employing these minority varieties in commercialized wines.
Bodegas Juan Carlos Sancha specializes in the production of artisan organic wines elaborated from these minority varieties.

Rioja | Spain
With its beautiful rolling landscapes, medieval hamlets and exquisite wines, La Rioja is Spain´s Tuscany. The wine area is sub divided into three regions- Rioja Alta (where most of the oldest wine ‘chateaux’ are located in and around Haro), Rioja Alavesa (which also belongs geographically to the Basque Country, and is home to some of the prettiest villages like Laguardia and Samaniego) and Rioja Baja (further southeast, a larger, more arid region whose main hub is Calahorra).
Among Spanish wine regions, Rioja ranks as the most renowned. It entered the modern commercial wine era in the 19th century, when French winemakers, looking to escape the spreading phylloxera plague in their own country, crossed the Pyrenees and settled here. Today, the region offers an elite mix of Franco-Iberian history, stunning scenery, proprietary cuisine, brilliant wines and a meshing of old and new.
