A fabulous Cava, made of the grapes from the oldest vines (between 40-50 years old) of the Capità Vidal property. A very limited production (only 3.500 bottles!) guarantees that only best of the best ends up in the bottle. Gran Fuchs de Vidal is a blend of the traditional varieties of Penedès: Xarel·lo, Macabeo and Parellada and has minimum period of ageing of 36 months. No residual sugar is added what makes the wine clean, fresh and dry. Such an amazing fizz.
Notes of peach, white flowers, fine pastry, citrus and some lactic touches.
Dry, with a vibrant acidity and minuscule, well-integrated bubbles. Long, complex finish.

The small winery was founded by one of the best known Spanish sailors Enrique Vidal (hence the name Capità (Captain) Vidal), who spent a lifetime sailing around the world. When he finally ‘came to port’, he decided to dig his sea legs into the earth and start a winery high in the Penedés. After decades of producing quality wine, the ‘captain’ who is now in his seventies, has retired to dedicate his days to sailing again. His stepdaughter Helena runs the business today and is the main winemaker.
Capità Vidal treats its products with genuine care and attention: the grapes are hand-picked and all the cava bottles are still hand-riddled. There are six wines on the market, but the main focus (and best-seller) of Capità Vidal are their cavas, known by the name of Fuchs de Vidal.
The winery itself, enclosed/surrounded by vineyards, is located in the Alt Penedes about 200 meters above the sea level. Inside, the two passions of Enrique Vidal – wine and sea – are exposed to the visitor through pictures, portraits and small design elements. With a yearly limited production, Capità Vidal is all about quality over quantity.

You may wonder where the DO Cava is located, and the answer is complex. Because Cava is actually a wine region without a region. DO Cava wines can be made wherever the cava-method is used and wherever cava-designated vineyards are located. This means that the DO is spread among 160 towns in seven of Spain’s political regions. However, most cavas are made in Cataluña, specifically in the Penedès area. The heart of Spain’s cava production is Sant Sadurní d’Anoia; 85 percent of all cavas produced in Spain come from this area in southern Barcelona province. The Ebro Valley is also home to quite a few cava vineyards.
Because the DO is located in many different areas, it’s nearly impossible to characterize its climate, soils or geography. Most of the designated cava vineyards enjoy a Mediterranean or continental climate.
Cava Grape Varieties
Traditionally, three grape varieties were used in cava production: Macabeo (viura), Xarel.lo (pansà blanca) and Parellada. Today, you can also find cava wines made from Chardonnay and Subirat Parent as well.
